Skirball Cultural Center
Location:
Los Angeles, CA, United States
Architect/Specifier:
Moshe Safdie
Billed one of the world's most dynamic Jewish cultural destinations, the Skirball Cultural Center sits nestled at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains in California. The design philosophy of renowned architect Moshe Safdie asserts that the architecture of a building must serve the essential purpose for which it will be used. The center describes itself as "a Jewish institution in an American context" that focuses on the horizontal orientation of "the human encounter." Accordingly, Safdie's design features a "series of longitudinal wings," which encompass open, light-filled galleries and rooms. As a result, the project uses a wide range of Hunter Douglas Contract Window Coverings solutions throughout the nearly 150,000 square-foot complex. These include unique skylight shades (pictured) as well as tensioned skylight systems.
